Trump Threatens Canada with Further Escalation in Trade War

Trade War Escalates Between the United States and Canada After New Tariffs Imposed

Washington, United States
In a new escalation, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened Canada with further retaliatory actions in the trade war between the two countries after Washington imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian imports.

Canada’s Response: Imposing Similar Tariffs on U.S. Imports
In a swift response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada would impose similar tariffs on U.S. imports. Trudeau confirmed that Canada would not stand idly by in the face of these measures, stating that his government would continue to take necessary steps to defend its economic interests.

Trump Mocks Trudeau and Calls for Increased Tariffs
President Trump once again mocked Canada’s Prime Minister, referring to him as “Governor Trudeau” through his “Truth Social” platform. Trump wrote: “Please explain to Trudeau, the Governor of Canada, that when he imposes retaliatory tariffs on the United States, the reciprocal tariffs will immediately rise by the same amount!”

Trudeau Responds Strongly: “America Is Waging a Trade War Against Canada”
Trudeau accused the United States of waging a trade war against Canada, stressing that Canada would not back down. He stated at a press conference: “Today, the United States launched a trade war against Canada, its closest partner and ally.” He added, “Canadians are reasonable and polite, but we will not back down when our country and the well-being of our people are at risk.”

Trudeau also criticized Trump directly, saying: “It is not my habit to agree with the Wall Street Journal, but, Donald, they point out that despite being a very smart man, this is a very foolish move.”

Trudeau Warns of the Impact of U.S. Tariffs on Americans
Trudeau pointed out that U.S. tariffs would increase the cost of daily life for Americans, with inflation rising and financial markets becoming volatile. He noted that the U.S. government’s decisions would negatively affect the average American citizen.

Reciprocal Measures Between the Two Countries
As part of the escalating trade war, the Trump administration imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports starting Tuesday. In retaliation, Trudeau announced a similar tariff on U.S. imports worth CAD 155 billion (approximately USD 107 billion). Trudeau emphasized that Canada would continue to take further retaliatory actions to show Trump that there are no winners in a trade war.
