The Liberal Party of Canada Chooses a Successor to Trudeau Amid Trade War with the U.S.

Mark Carney Appointed Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada

On Sunday, the Liberal Party of Canada announced the appointment of Mark Carney, former governor of two central banks in Canada and the United Kingdom, as the new leader of the party. Carney is also seen as a potential candidate for the role of Prime Minister of Canada. This announcement comes at a critical time, as Canada faces both economic and diplomatic challenges, particularly in its relationship with the United States.

Economic and Diplomatic Challenges

Canada is currently facing severe economic tensions with the United States. U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose additional tariffs on Canadian goods. These threats could deepen Canada’s economic crisis, complicating negotiations with the United States. At the same time, the Canadian government is experiencing internal division. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in January his intention to step down after a significant decline in his popularity.

Fast-Tracked Leadership Election in the Liberal Party

In light of these crises, the Liberal Party decided to hold a fast-tracked election to select a new leader. Polls conducted by Mainstreet Research in February showed strong support for Mark Carney, with 43% of the party members backing him, surpassing his main rival, former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, who garnered 31%. It is worth noting that Freeland had left the government in December following disagreements over spending policies.

Mark Carney: The First Non-Politician to Potentially Lead the Government

If Mark Carney, 59, wins the upcoming election, he would become the first person in Canada’s history to take the role of Prime Minister without prior political experience. Carney has never held a political office. He has stated that his experience leading the central banks of Canada and the UK gives him the necessary skills to deal with the U.S. president during this critical period.

New Economic Strategy

Carney has expressed support for strong economic measures, such as imposing retaliatory tariffs on the United States. He also emphasized the importance of implementing a coordinated strategy to stimulate investment and achieve sustainable economic growth in Canada. He believes that the current government’s policies under Trudeau are ineffective in achieving the desired economic growth.

Improvement in the Liberal Party’s Polling Numbers

Carney’s appointment has coincided with economic and diplomatic challenges, contributing to a rise in the Liberal Party’s standing in public opinion polls. At the beginning of 2025, the party trailed the Conservative Party by over 20 points. However, it is now in a tie with the Conservatives in several polls, suggesting the possibility of a political recovery under Carney’s leadership.
